Since the 1860s, Georg Herwegh initially supported the founded by Ferdinand Lassalle General German Workers' Association and in 1869 the left wing of the German labor movement, by Bebel and Liebknecht Founded Socialist Workers Party. As on 23 May 1863 the General German Workers' Association (ADAV) founded and Ferdinand Lasalle was elected the first president, he asked the poet Georg Herwegh a "fierce and attractive" Federal library. It is the first song of the politically organized German workers' movement! The words Herwegh, the poet of the 1848 revolution, were set to music several times, including by the famous conductor Hans von Bülow 1863, who published the melody under the pseudonym "W. Solinger. Its melody was but never prevail. Mostly it was sung to the tune of "Schleswig Holstein cognate.
